Nicely aged and distressed pieces add a bit of fun to mixed-media artwork and other displays
I was pleasantly surprised by how nice these little pocket watch casings turned out to be. The product page refers to them as "trinkets" and I guess I was expecting something extremely flimsy and cheap looking based on that wording and the low price. However, what I received was a package with two solidly-made metal pocket watch casings with a wonderful distressed-looking finish. To be clear, these aren't intended for holding the actual workings of a good, operational pocket watch. Instead, they're for artistic purposes -- to be included in multi-media artwork, scrapbooking, diaramas, antique displays, you-name-it.The square look is different than the other pocket watch casings that I've seen (and bought) on the craft market such as the larger round one made by Tim Holtz. I'd wondered if the Tim Holtz metal watch face findings would work with these Prima Marketing casings since some of those metal watch faces have that same antique look. I have a packet of them and tried them out. None work with the smallest Prima Marketing pocket watch and the only one that *could* work with the large pocket watch is the second to the smallest Tim Holtz watch face. It's actually too small so you'd have to mount it on something a bit bigger--otherwise it would slide around and fall out.The finish on these pocket watches is my favorite part. For the low price, I'd expected that the distressed and antique look pictured in the photos on the product page would look plastic-y and different in real life when I received my "trinkets." But, no. The ones that I received look great. The "rust" finish is in the areas that you'd expect to find rust and the areas that you’d expect to be "well worn" are a dark matte metal. This rust finish can be scraped somewhat easily, though. So I'd suggest that if you're using it for an art project where there may be ongoing contact with the pocket watch, you may want to give it a final coat with a protective finish to keep that rust from getting scratched. Be sure to use a "matte" finish, though, if you want to keep the dull, antique appearance.A few details about the pocket watches. Unlike a couple of competitors on the market, these do not have glass or plastic faces (just the empty opening). The large watch is 1-3/4" square with a 1-1/4" round opening. The small watch is 7/8" with an *almost* 3/4" round opening. Both pocket watches have two small screws on the back which allow you to remove the back plate to place objects and/or photos inside. (The round opening on the front also gives you access without removing the back, but removing the back also allows you to place metal or rigid pieces that would not otherwise bend to fit inside the round opening.)NOTE: Unlike real pocket watches, the top piece (the bow and pendant) is completely non-movable.
